After China’s entry into the WTO, Dalian became the first city that financial business and insurance were opened at
the same timein China today. And the proposal “constructing a city in knowledge type ” was first put forward in Dalian.

Dalian University of Technology is the first university since the founding of the People Republic of China.

Mr. Qu Bochuan, a famous scholar and educator, was the principal founder of Dalian University of Technology. He successively held the posts of the academic dean of Yan’an Institute of Natural Science, the director of the experimental institute of the Shanxi-Chaha’er-Hebei Military Area, and the president of Dalian University of Technology. He took up the post of honorary president of Dalian University of technology in 1981 and obtained the Award for the Highlighted Seniors from the State Educational Commission the same year. Later he was elected the committee member of the Sixth Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.	Mr. Qian Lingxi, a distinguished expert in mechanics and a senior Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won prizes of the State Natural Science Award and the State Science and Technology achievements Award. He has been entitled to honors such as the national model worker and the provincial teacher of exploits.	Mr. Cheng Gengdong, a specialist on mechanics engineering and an academician of the Chinese academy of the Sciences, has won the second prize of the State Natural Science Award, the first and the second Scientific Development Award from the State Educational Committee and some other prizes.

Mr. Zhong Wanxie, a specialist on mechanics engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, devotes himself to the study of the relations and interference among the new fields.	Mr. Qiu Dahong, an expert on coastal and off-shore engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won the first and second prizes of the Scientific Development Award from the State Educational Committee and the gold medal of the Design of Excellence from the State Construction Committee.	Mr. Lin Gao, a specialist in hydraulic engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won 10 prizes of the national, provincial and ministerial levels and has been entitled to many honors.

Mr. Zhao Guofan, an expert on civil structure engineering and an academician of the Chinese academy of Sciences, has won 15 prizes at national, provincial and ministerial level and many other awards. He has also been entitled to several honors.	Mr. Ding Dewen an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering and an expert on marine environment engineering and thermodynamics in frigid zone, started the research both in thermodynamics in frigid zone and engineering of marine ice dynamics in China. He has won as many as 20 prizes of national, ministerial and provincial awards and now the director of the marine environment and resources reutilization project of the 9^th five-year plan.	Prof. Z.F. Cui(Cui Zhanfeng), the first Chinese professor (from Mainland) in University of Oxford and one of youngest professor in history(Oct 2000 - Donald Pollock Professor of Chemical Engineering), took an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the Dalian University of Technology, China (1982–7).
