    Mr. Qu Bochuan, a famous scholar and educator, was the principal founder of Dalian University of Technology. He successively held the posts of the academic dean of Yan’an Institute of Natural Science, the director of the experimental institute of the Shanxi-Chaha’er-Hebei Military Area, and the president of Dalian University of Technology. He took up the post of honorary president of Dalian University of technology in 1981 and obtained the Award for the Highlighted Seniors from the State Educational Commission the same year. Later he was elected the committee member of the Sixth Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

    Mr. Qian Lingxi, a distinguished expert in mechanics and a senior Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won prizes of the State Natural Science Award and the State Science and Technology achievements Award. He has been entitled to honors such as the national model worker and the provincial teacher of exploits.

    Mr. Zhang Dayu, a famous physical chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was the founder of Dalian Chemical and Physical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He attached importance to the elementary research and made outstanding contribution to the establishment and development of the four disciplines in the Institute.
    Mr. Lu Peizhang, a physical chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is one of the pioneers in China's chromatogram analysis. He has won the third prize of the State Natural Science Award, the first prize of the Science and Technology Achievement Award from Liaoning Province and "Tsiweit" prize from the Former Russian Chromatogram Institute. 　

    Mr. Zhang Cunhao is a chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His multi-field research has presented the initiative significance. He has won Wu Jiansiong Physics Award and many state level awards.

    Mr. Guo Xiexian, a chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, won the third prize of the Award from the Chinese Academy of sciences, the first prize of the Excellence Achievement Award and the National Scientist Award.

    Mr. Qiu Dahong, an expert on coastal and off-shore engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won the first and second prizes of the Scientific Development Award from the State Educational Committee and the gold medal of the Design of Excellence from the State Construction Committee.

    		 Mr. Yuan Quan, a chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won 9 prizes such as the third prize of the State Natural Science Award, the second prize of Scientific Development Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Lou Nanquan, the chief scientist of the national "Key Project" program and an academician of the Chinese academy of sciences, has won the second and the third prizes of the State Natural Science Award, the first prizes of the Scientific Development Award and the Important Achievement Award from the Chinese academy of Sciences and the "Gold Bull" Award.
    Mr. Lin Liwu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a national model worker, has won 11 prizes of the national, provincial and ministerial levels. Mr. Zhong Wanxie, a specialist on mechanics engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, devotes himself to the study of the relations and interference among the new fields.

    Mr. Ding Dewen an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering and an expert on marine environment engineering and thermodynamics in frigid zone, started the research both in thermodynamics in frigid zone and engineering of marine ice dynamics in China. He has won as many as 20 prizes of national, ministerial and provincial awards and now the director of the marine environment and resources reutilization project of the 9th five-year plan.
    Wang Liding, a specialist of precision machine and micro/nano machine, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research won him the award of National Science Conference. He gained twice the special prize of national science and technology promotion, twice the second prize of national science and technology promotion, and twice the first prize of important science and technology achievement offered by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Cheng Gengdong, a specialist on mechanics engineering and an academician of the Chinese academy of the Sciences, has won the second prize of the State Natural Science Award, the first and the second Scientific Development Award from the State Educational Committee and some other prizes.

    Mr. Shen Wensun, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a research fellow engineer of Dalian New Shipyard. His research and designs won the first and second prizes of the National Science and Development Award, Provincial New Product of Excellence Prize and 4 Prizes of the provincial and ministerial awards.

    Mr. Sha Guohe is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research has presented creative significance and received the second, the third and the fourth prizes of the State Natural Science Award.

    Mr. Lin Gao, a specialist in hydraulic engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won 10 prizes of the national, provincial and ministerial levels and has been entitled to many honors.

    		 Mr. Zhao Guofan, an expert on civil structure engineering and an academician of the Chinese academy of Sciences, has won 15 prizes at national, provincial and ministerial level and many other awards. He has also been entitled to several honors.
    Mr. He Guozhong, a chemist and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has won the second and third prizes of State Natural Science Award, the second prize of the Significance Award from National Defence Committee of Science and the first prize of the Scientific Development Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

    Wang Xingang, a well-known Dalian-born artist, began his career from modern dramatic art when he was younger than 20. His later outstanding performances in films such as The Red Women Soldiers, Fighting in the Ancient City and Bosom Friend, have made a very deep impression upon the audience. He won the prize of the best leading actor in the "Fifth One Hundred Flower Award" of China.

    		Gu Jianfen, born in Dalian, started her career by working for the Dalian Song and Dance Troupe. She became a famous composer because of her persistent pursuit. She wrote music for songs such as "Where Is the Spring", "Young Friends Come Together", and "Singing and Smiling". These songs, with beautiful melody and lively rhythm, have been passed on for decades,. Nearly a hundred songs with music by her have won big prizes at home and abroad.

    Fang Hua is a famous Dalian-born actor. What made him first well-known was his successful performance in several modern dramas after the "August 15th Recovery. After liberation, he has worked both as a film director and an actor. He is especially famous for playing the negative roles in films such as A Guerrilla Detachment on the Plain, The Three Sisters of the Song Family, and A Family in Shanghai.

    Dalian is the second hometown of Li Ling, a well-known actress. She had first worked in a factory in the suburb of Dalian. By passing an examination, she was admitted into the Central Experiment Modern Drama Troupe, which was the starting point of her art career. Due to her exquisite and vivid performance in such films and telefilms as Ward No. 16, A Girl from the Yellow Mountain, The Last Imperial Concubine, and Song Qingling and Her Sisters, she won the laurel as the best leading actress of the "Golden Pheasant Award", the "Golden Eagle Award" and the "Flying Apsaras Award" respectively.

    Xu Peidong, a Dalian-born composer, has become famous for the trilogy: Fence, Woman, and Dog reflecting life in the countryside. The TV serials were produced by Dalian Television Station. Mr. Xu has created songs for The Yongzheng Dynasty and many other telefilms. They gained him considerable reputation and won him the best composition prize of the "Golden Eagle Award".

    Whenever Zhang Li, a well-known song writer born in Dalian, is mentioned, people would naturally associate him with songs such as "Shadow of the Wattle Wall", "Miserable and Happy Years", "Fate is not Windass", "Power of Asia", and "Empress Wu Ze". He cooperated well with his town fellow Xu Peidong in writing songs for telefilms. His unique conception and original words bring to people a fresh air.

    Fan Linlin Graduated from Dalian No. 23 Middle School and then was admitted by Shenyang Conservatory of Music. When she finished her study there, she was assigned to work in Dalian Song and Dance Troupe. Fate brought her back to Dalian and she was lucky to be back because the songs she sang in the TV serials Fence, Woman, and Dog made her a singing star overnight. She is now a first class actress in the Song and Dance Troupe of the General Political Department.

    Mr. Li Qiankuan is a well-known movie director from Dalian. The three films-The Founding Ceremony of China, The Negotiation in Chongqing and Episodes of the Decisive Campaign directed by him have unique angles of views and are magnificent momentums which express the real facts of history. They all have won considerable acclaim from the audience and have been awarded many prizes.

    Yang Hongji, a renowned Dalian-born dramatist and singer became famous for acting as the leading actor in the opera Aolei Yilan. Songs such as "We Walk along the Wide Road", "Night in the Outskirts of Moscow" sung by him have been very popular. They won him the "Plum Blossom Award" and "Wen Hua Award".

    		 Liu Changshun, a sprinter from Dalian, was known as "the First Chinese in the Olympic Games". In 1929. he set the record for the national 100-meter dash. In 1930s, he was the only Chinese who attended the 10th Olympic Games held in the US. Although he did not win any awards, he demonstrated the strong will of the Chinese people. Zou Zhenxian, a graduate from Dalian No. 21 Middle School, was known as the "Asian Flying Man". His jump(17.02 meters) at the Track and Field Tournament of 1979 shocked the world. In 1981, he took the second place in the World Cup of Track and Field Contest. Because he was the only Asian athlete who had won such a place in such sports event, the Asian Track and Field Association awarded him the "Golden Boots Prize".
    Xu Yongjiu was a student of Dalian No. 107 Middle School. Nicknamed "Flying Foot", she took the first place and set a new record in the 6th World Cup of Heel-and-Toe Walking Race in 1983. She was the first Chinese athlete who had won the first place in such sports event.

    Dalian is the first special zone of Soccer playing nationwide. In 1994 its soccer team took the championship in the seasonal matches of the professional soccer games of China. In 1995, Chi Shangbin, a former player on the National Soccer Team, determinedly took the position of the chief coach when Dalian Team was facing a difficult situation. He led the team to the championship successively for two years and set the record of "No Failure " for as many as 55 games.

    		 Li Fusheng, now the Captain of Ba Yi Sports Team, is well known to us Dalian people not only because you were born here, but also because you were the "Lock"-an excellent goalkeeper-of our National Soccer Team.
    Li Yongbo, the general coach of China's Badminton Team at present, once won the first place in the World Badminton Match. He led his team to the championship of Suliman Cup in 1995, 1997, and 1999 running.

    Students of Dalian No. 2 Middle School may still remember Li Zhixin, your former schoolmate. He is now the managing deputy chairman of China's Mountaineering Association and reached Mount Everest in 1988. He is the first Chinese mountaineer who has ever reached the highest mountain in the world.

    		 Wang Yan, a former student of Qi Pan Mo Primary School in Ganjingzi District, is a representative of Dalian women Bicycle Team that has frequently made brilliant achievements. She took the gold medal for the 20-kilometer race in the World Cup of 1997 held in Australia.
    Ma Junren, the famous coach both home and abroad, led his athletes to championships for 88 times in various sports events. This well-known coach has a loud voice. People can tell easily that he has brought his runners for the first place the minute he speaks.

    Wang Junxia, Qu Yunxia and Liu Dong were former students of Dalian middle school No. 25, 119 and 107 respectively. In 1993, they obtained 3 gold medals for women 1500-, 3000- and 10000-meter races in the Fourth World Track and Field Tournament. Their achievements have once and for all changed the historical fact that no Asians had ever won any gold medals in such world sports event. Wang Junxia, named the "Magic Deer in the East", won a gold medal and a silver medal in the Olympic Games of 1996 and was the first Chinese sportswoman who won the laurel of championship in World Track and Filed races. She was also the recipient of Owens international award and was the first Asian athlete who gained such a special fame. Jiang Bo and Dong Yanmei are also highly competitive athletes in track and field events.

    		 Emerging swimming star Chen Yan won a gold medal at the 1998 World Swimming Championships.
