A Brief History
Introduction
The University of Cambridge is rich in history
- its famous Colleges and University buildings
attract visitors from all over the world.
But the University's museums and collections
also hold many treasures which give an exciting
insight into some of the scholarly activities,
both past and present, of the University's
academics and students.
The University of Cambridge is one of the
oldest universities in the world and one
of the largest in the United Kingdom. Its
reputation for outstanding academic achievement
is known world-wide and reflects the intellectual
achievement of its students, as well as the
world-class original research carried out
by the staff of the University and the Colleges.
Many of the University's customs and unusual
terminology can be traced to roots in the
early years of the University's long history,
and this booklet looks to the past to find
the origins of much that is distinctive in
the University of today.

布鲁斯1965年获剑桥大学电子工程学博士，随后任职美国IBM公司19年。其主要研究工作是微电子器件的制作，并首次演示了如今在硅芯片上写入图样的电子束制版方式。他设计使用电子器件生产工具的开发以及IBM计算机主机的高新微电子技术。因其长时间来在技术方面的杰出贡献，布鲁斯曾当选IBM的首席科学家（IBM最高技术级别，1977）、IBM技术委员会成员（1984）和IBM科学顾问委员会成员（1990-1992）。
布鲁斯1984年返回剑桥大学创立纳米加工实验室并继续研究纳米加工技术的极限及其在功能器件上的应用。他是剑桥电子工程学教授（1984-1996）、三一学院院士（1985-1990）、邱吉尔学院院长（1990-1996）和工程学部主任（1993-1996）。布鲁斯于1996年任剑桥大学校长，成为剑桥建校800多年来第一位工程师出身的校长。目前，他还当选为英国皇家工程院院长。
布鲁斯在过去几年中被选为英国政府、EEC和北约等多种机构的成员，如英国工程、物理和研究协会(EPSPC)、信息技术前瞻内阁小组、北约纳米科学专门小组和科学顾问委员会小组等。

主要著作、发明创造及在社会活动中的主要贡献
1963年，首次发明了用于尺寸小于1微米的电子器件结构制作的40纳米钨导线技术
1965年，首次将镧化合物阴极装置用在电子显微镜和电子探针仪器上
1969年，制作了当时最小可工作的电子器件，即3.5GHz线宽为0.15微米的表面波延迟线
1972年，与Sedgwick共同发明了用在纳米结构器件的窄窗基板
1978年，首次制成了亚8纳米至10纳米的金钯线
1988年，利用350千伏电子束印刷技术制作5纳米金-钯线
1991年，制成了二氧化硅层上的11纳米中心对中心格栅栏
1991年，与Campell等人制成了由直接电子束辐照产生的高温超导微桥
布鲁斯在Science, IEEE, Transactions of Electron
Devices, Solid State Technology, Applied
Physics Letters等著名杂志上共发表约150篇学术论文。许多国家的科技会议论文集也收录过他的工作，如在日本召开的X射线光学和微解析会议、在美国召开的扫描电子显微镜研讨会、在法国召开的显微技术研讨会等。布鲁斯在学术和科研上的贡献是显著的。
曾获得主要的学位和学衔
1959年和1960年分别获墨尔本大学物理学和电子学学士学位；
1962年获剑桥大学机械科学学士学位；
1965年获剑桥大学电子工程博士学位；

对中国的主要贡献
1999年11月，江泽民主席访问剑桥大学。布鲁斯校长热情接待了中国代表团，主持了江主席在剑桥的演讲，陪同参观并设宴款待。借江主席访问剑桥之机，布鲁斯与香港企业家李嘉诚商谈，促成李嘉诚基金会资助剑桥著名学者访问中国。这些学者包括诺贝尔经济奖得主James
Mirrles博士等人，他们访问北大、清华等高等学府和研究机构，与中国的科研人员直接对话，直接促进了中英两国在科研学术领域的往来。此前，布鲁斯也曾热情接待过教育部陈至立部长等访问团。
布鲁斯担任剑桥校长时，建立了资助中国学生的专项奖学金ChinaTrust。该奖学金每年为几十名中国学生提供帮助，使他们能顺利就读剑桥大学。在布鲁斯的推动和支持下，剑桥大学“中国问题研究中心”在其东亚研究所成立。布鲁斯邀请我国国家领导人李岚清、我驻英大使马振岗、欧盟委员会立昂·布里坦等知名人士为该中心题词，扩大了剑桥中国问题研究在世界的影响。布鲁斯还在其任期内大力支持剑桥大学"李约瑟研究所"，对宣传中国第一任海外院士和中国科技史专家李约瑟及推广传播李约瑟的著作作出了重要贡献。布鲁斯于2000年10月来华参加"国际工程科学大会"并做重要报告。他的来访增进了我国科技界与世界杰出学者的友谊。
剑桥大学有800多年的历史，今天它在许多人文和自然科学方面的研究工作都处于世界领先的地位。布鲁斯是世界著名的科学家、英国科技界的领导人之一。

北京大学“剑桥大学日”
4月12日上午，英国剑桥大学校长布鲁斯爵士北大名誉博士学位授予仪式暨演讲会在北京大学办公楼礼堂举行。教育部副部长章新胜，英国驻华大使、随同布鲁斯爵士访问的7位知名教授， 北京大学校长许智宏，常务副校长闵维方，副校长郝平、吴志攀出席了授位仪式和演讲会，来自北大各院系的师生代表近700人参加了这一重要活动。
授位仪式暨演讲会由常务副校长闵维方主持，许智宏校长致欢迎辞。许校长在致辞中首先对布鲁斯校长及其代表团的到来表示最热烈的欢迎，并能够为布鲁斯校长授予名誉博士学位而感到高兴。他指出“剑桥大学日”无疑是北京大学在创建世界一流大学过程中一次意义深远的活动。致辞结束后，举行了名誉博士学位授予仪式。随后，剑桥大学校长布鲁斯爵士为北大师生做了题为“新千年的大学－前沿与合作”的演讲。布鲁斯校长在演讲中回顾了上个世纪剑桥大学与中国友好往来的历史，他指出在当今形势下，剑桥大学将从各个方面，多角度，更为深入地与中国展开学术交流。他明确表示，剑桥大学与北京大学有着很好的合作潜力，并会成为非常好的合作伙伴。
在随后举行的新闻发布会上，布鲁斯校长以及代表团成员一致称赞北大学生对国际事务的敏锐、对国家的责任感、充分的自信心和优秀的英文口头表达能力。
下午，国务院副总理李岚清在中南海紫光阁会见了布鲁斯校长一行，双方就两国在教育特别是高等教育领域的交流与合作等问题交换了意见。

University, Sir. Bruce will come to visit
Peking University together with his delegations.
And he will also accept the honorary Ph.D.
Degree awarded by Beida. The two universities
have also reached an agreement that they
will name the day of April 12 as the "Cambridge
Day" of Peking University in order to
promote the comprehensive cooperation of
the Beida and Cambridge.
On the morning of April 12, Sir. Bruce is
supposed to attend the meeting for awarding
him the honorary title an then give a speech.
In the afternoon, the other 7 famous professors
from Cambridge University will go to the
related schools and departments and to talk
with the students and teachers of Peking
University.

China's President Jiang Zemin is shown a

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Anne Lonsdale, said
that the students who come to Cambridge from
China and Hong Kong are highly motivated
and have an impressive record of achievement.
They also value their period of study here.
"China is a country which will have
a major impact on the world in the 21st century
and it is important to give Cambridge students
a chance to learn about the language, culture
and government of such a huge global player,"
she said.
